Freie Journalisten arbeiten häufig auch in PR und Werbung. Dies ergibt eine Studie der LMU München, die im Auftrag des Deutschen Fachjournalisten-Verbandes (DFJV) durchgeführt worden ist. Fast jeder zweite freie Journalist übt daher neben seiner Tätigkeit als Journalist eine Nebentätigkeit aus. Als Nebentätigkeit haben die Studienteilnehmer dabei am häufigsten das Berufsfeld “PR/Werbung” angegeben.
